In 2024, I had heart surgery for an irregular heartbeat. My Little Black Heart, optimistically encrusted with colorful crystals, lies deep within a cadre of healthcare providers who surrounded, protected and treated my flawed heart for over four years.
I think also that many of us conceal our metaphorical little black hearts within layers of gaiety and composure. Bright colors can sometime camouflage darkness and grief. Perhaps the forced radiance helps offset the melancholia. Lessons can be learned even from the worst of circumstances.
